Calamity #23 – Stand By

Featuring a second flight for Brewster McCloud and some other things, some in a different order due to a late-nite Counterpart double. NB: A slightly later start today.

16:15 – Motörhead – Footage of Lemmy & co from"The Saturday Starship" (5th October 1984), featuring an appearance by Timmy Mallett, and preceded by ten minutes of “music” to boot so YMMV etc. (the full episode appears to be lost to Youtube. And a personal HDD failure.)

16:45 – Pee-wee’s Playhouse S04E07 – Heat Wave
On an especially hot day in the Playhouse, Pee-wee plays “courtroom” to judge over Miss Yvonne and Mrs. René wearing the same one-of-a-kind dress. Featuring The Song of the Birds (1935).

17:13 – Dr Katz S01E06 – Family Car
Ben borrows the family car.
Dr. Katz sees Anthony Clark and Andy Kindler. What, no Ray Romano?

17:35 – Space Ghost Coast to Coast S03E13 – Cookout
The Council of Doom judge a cooking contest. Zorak wants all the bones.

17:59 – Duckman S02E09 – Clip Job
Henry Melfly (voiced by Ben Stiller) kidnaps Duckman, blaming him for the decline in moral, family-friendly shows, resulting in a clip show as he argues his point.

18:22 – Mannix S01E19 – You Can Get Killed Out There
Mannix must find the man who stole a necklace. Howard Da Silva and Marianna Hill guest star.

19:17 – Portlandia S03E09 – Alexandra
Carrie and Fred’s roommate complicates their relationship. Portland is overrun with art projects. A movie theater sells artisanal concessions. Coyotes are threatening Kath and Dave’s neighborhood. Visitors tour the Historical Punk Society. Jean-Luc Godard and French New Wave are a motif.

19:41 – Fernwood 2 Night S01E13 Tony Rolletti and Susan Cloud – July 20 1977
In light of Martin Mull (maybe better known as Arrested Development’s “Gene Parmesan”)’s passing a week ago, tonight comes with a double helping of ——–2 Nights. First, in Ohio, Barth and Jerry’s guests are Tony Roletti (“The man who insists on singing!”) and health store owner Susan Cloud.

20:10 – America 2 Night S01E60Virgil Sims and Shari LewisJune 30 1978
A year later, in sleepy Alta Coma, California, Jerry and Barth have been allowed to have real guests. Tonight, motorhome daredevil Virgil Simms has some more tragic tales from the world of large-scale (as in, you’d have to put it on a weighbridge) stunts. Along with Virgil is (actual celebrity guest) Shari Lewis*… but where is Lamb Chop?

20:30 – Brewster McCloud (1970)
A dark comedy featuring some of the cast of M*A*S*H (1970) – Bud Cort (Harold and Maude, Electric Dreams), Sally Kellerman (second Star Trek TOS Pilot, Slither, Decker: Unclassified), John Schuck (Babylon 5, DS9, Voyager, and supposedly “the first person to say ‘fuck’ in a major studio film” – in M*A*S*H, in fact (during the football game at the end)), and Rene Auberjonois (Rene Auberjonois!) – plus Stacy Keach (Mike Hammer, Escape From L.A.), Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz) and others, with a debut from Shelley Duvall, and even a first sighting of Marilyn Burns if you look hard enough!

Directed by Robert Altman, this was the first film shot inside the massive Houston Astrodome. A year or so after the grand opening in 1965 featuring Judy Garland (whose own act was apparently preceded by the Supremes), the original natural grass playing surface died, and so in ’66 the Astrodome was the first major sports venue to install artificial turf – giving us the name AstroTurf (as opposed to the amusing original: “ChemGrass”). The dome also featured the “Astrolite” – apparently the first animated scoreboard, driven by a custom computer (unfortunately scrapped in the 1980s) and had a control panel that took 6 human people to operate! — this film has everything else too – murder, mystery, sex, fast cars, The Wicked Witch of the West, Rene Auberjonois, and plenty of bird shit!

Info on the scoreboard and more sourced from Wikipedia and here – The Houston Astrolite – a Marvel of Early Technology

Following the film:
“The Astrodome” (25mins approx) – “Definitive film documenting the construction of the Houston Astrodome”
– – – – – “…in anticipation of coordinated erection of dome members yet to come.” – – – – –
Viewing advice – the red channel in the documentary is rather strong – since I’m not quite sure how to (without demuxing, remuxing, reencoding etc) reduce it, so best turn down your red gamma, or just drop the colour right down, if possible, for the duration.

22:50 – Jan Švankmajer- Jabberwocky (1971)
Jabberwocky (Czech: Žvahlav aneb šatičky slaměného Huberta) is a Czechoslovak animated short film written and directed by Jan Švankmajer, based loosely on the 1871 poem “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll and on a children’s book Anička skřítek a Slaměný Hubert by Vítězslav Nezval, which is referenced in the Czech title.

23:06 – Counterpart S01E09/10 – No Man’s Land
It’s another Howard-off in this double bill/season finale of the first of the two seasons. If you think that sentence is confusing, you should try following the plot…

A little music follows, then…
01:09 – The Ray Bradbury Theater S03E10 – Hail And Farewell
A young man (Josh Saviano), unable to age, makes a profession out of his situation, for his sake and others.

———————–
Some more music then follows at about 1:30, and something like a “hidden track” of a hellish soundscape follows that, as if tucked away at the end of an old VHS found in an older basement. Thought I’d mention it, don’t need to be frightening your cat or anything. Nothing else follows that, though.

With music throughout provided by The Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Dr. Sure’s Unusual Practice, Guerilla Toss, Le Butcherettes, Hellrazor, The Bobby Lees, Mastodon, Anal Cunt, Pinknruby, Salvatore Ganacci, Wombo, Kyuss, Mr Bungle and Tool. In that order.

*who, with her husband Jeremy Tarcher, co-wrote “The Lights of Zetar”, the 18th episode of the third season of Star Trek TOS. Lamb Chop’s involvement with the episode is, alas, undocumented.
