In the absence of Meatball TV tonight, I’ve hurriedly thrown together this lot for you all.
19:00 – Intro music.
19:04 – A railway cab ride accompanied by some tuneage – Part 1 of a three-part journey from Settle to Carlisle.
19:55 – Rainbow – Naughty Zippy
20:09 – A Rough Sketch (1968) – The original black-and-white prototype for the short film Powers of Ten (1977), showing the scale of the universe by zooming in and out.
20:17 – James Burke – Connections – S01E02 – “Death in the Morning” – Second episode of the legendary series exploring the history of technology in a non-conventional way. First broadcast Tue 24th October 1978, 7.20pm, BBC1.
21:06 – Cosmic Zoom (1968) – The National Film Board of Canada’s take on the Powers of Ten concept, done in a more cartoony and musical style, featuring a boy, a canoe, and a mosquito. At least two of us were shown this in primary school on actual film.
21:14 – Carnival of Souls (1962) – an American independent horror film about a young woman whose life is disturbed after a car accident. Not seen this, but at least this time I checked the ratings and people seem to like it — it has been cited as an influence on David Lynch and George A. Romero amongst others.
22:37 – Powers of Ten™ (1977) – and finally, arguably the best known and definitive version of the, er, Powers of Ten concept. This is the version that got selected for preservation in the Library of Congress. It’s worth mentioning at this point that ALL of these films were based on the book Cosmic View (1957) by Dutch educator Kees Boeke.
22:46 – For All Mankind (1989) – Legendary film about the Apollo 11 moon landing, comprised entirely of footage shot at the time, with no narration or later interviews. Soundtrack by Brian Eno (released on the album “Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks” six years earlier), including the famous tune “An Ending (Ascent)”. Not this film’s first showing on CaB TV (previously shown on 2019/06/18) but I think it deserves a repeat as some haven’t seen it.
00:09 – How The Motor Car Works – The Engine – another Trade Test Colour Film Transmission shown on BBC2 in the late-60s to early-70s. Warning: contains naked views of internal combustion engines, with bare cylinders, pistons going up and down and valves going in and out.
00:25 – Rave Party Songs Mix #1 – Psy Trance, Minimal, Goa Trance, Heavy Bass – In an effort not to play out my Orb, Future Shock, or Echoes items yet again, I poached this off of YouTube after playing only a few seconds of it. Could be great, could be pants.
01:31 00:25 – Closedown music.
01:36 00:30 – Closedown.
