8:00 The Ninth Configuration (1980)

FEATURE PRESENTATION

The Ninth Configuration (1980)

In this film, written and directed by William Peter Blatty, we follow Capt. Billy Cutshaw, a troubled astronaut in the midst of an existential crisis. The film deals with the notions of sanity, insanity and faith. The narrative is divided into two halves; a more humorous and absurd first half and a second, darker and more contemplative second half.

FUN FACT: The film is also technically a part of the Exorcist universe. This scene from The Exorcist has Regan telling Capt. Cutshaw that he’s “gonna die up there” (the implication being on an upcoming mission to space).…

19:04 Jason of Star Command Ch.1 and Ch.2. Terrible TV Science Fiction that makes Buck Rogers in the 25th Century seem like 2001 a Space Odyssey. Features Craig Littler as Not Han Solo, and that fella who played Scotty in Star Trek with sadness in his eyes.

19:27 Out of the Unknown – The Man in My Head. “A group of soldiers led by Brinson (Tom Chadbon) break into a Hydro Electric Plant.  They are members of a Strike Force, an elite group of soldiers who have had their orders subliminally implanted.  Until they receive the appropriate radio signal they don’t know where they are or what they have to do.” Nothing can go wrong.

After the music show, the normal opening shows will start a bit later than usual; at 6pm we’ll be kicking off with some international PIFs. After a selection of our usual shows, we’ll be watching the unaired pilot of Big Night Out. Tonight’s film will be Cowboy Bebop: The Movie (2001), shown in its rightful place between sessions 22 and 23 of the original series.

Flouncer fancied a break this Thursday, so to fill the GAPING void, Hog and Phil are teaming up to present a series of films by or relating to the king of Germany, Werner Herzog and his troublesome squire, actor extraordinaire, Klaus ‘The Kunt’ Kinski.

We’ll start the evening off with a couple of early short Herzog films from the 60’s – Herakles (1962) and Precautions Against Fanatics (1969), followed by a 1976 Omnibus special on the New Wave of German Cinema, featuring among others, Herzog.

Then we’ve got 2 Herzog directed documentaries: Land of Silence and Darkness (1971) – a remarkably touching and troubling look at the lives of the simultaneously deaf and blind, followed by Mein Liebster Feind [My Best Fiend] (1999) – a personal look into the difficult relationship between Werner and his leading actor, Klaus Kinski.

Next we roll onto our feature film, Herzog’s take on Murnau’s silent horror masterpiece (and improving on it somewhat) – Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979),…

9:30 The Exorcist III (1990)

FEATURE PRESENTATION

The Exorcist III (1990)

PLEASE NOTE: I am skipping The Exorcist II for now, so please don’t feel that you’re missing anything if you’ve only watched the original film (which I streamed last week). The Exorcist III picks up where the first film left off. There is no required information in the second film. In fact, it’s a big steaming pile of horse crap and can safely be disregarded from canon altogether (or shot out of a cannon and into the sea, for that matter).
