I’m doing a short fill-in stream this week before Ed comes on at 8, as in keeping with other recent bonus streams with we’ll be having some schools programmes, some vintage kids TV, comedy and animation. We’ll also be having the classic documentary Cracked Actor, a film following Dave Bowie of the Dave Bowie Band as he goes mental on tour in America. See you then!

This Friday marks a full year of consecutive Friday broadcasts on my channel. A nice mix plucked off the shelf – this is a summery laid-back ride through some of the big beat and grooves being played in the bars, pubs and clubs in August 1997. This mix was put together at that time for GQ magazine.

18:15   Room 101 – Tony Slattery (1992)
Classic episode of the superior Radio 5 incarnation of Room 101 – the antidote to Desert Island Discs. Tony Slattery expertly makes the case against his least favourite records, places and TV programmes.

18:45   Beat The Teacher (1986)
Children’s BBC swept into the broom cupboard era with this noughts-and-crosses quiz, pitching kids against teachers. Wouldn’t you prefer a nice game of chess?

19:05   Absolutely (1992)
The finest sketch comedy made by Channel 4. This one’s from its final series, branded by many as the poorest series – but which actually contains most of the tightest and funniest individual sketches, proving that comedy fans are never to be trusted.

This week’s show doesn’t really have a year theme, though there is a fair bit of stuff from 1991/1992 towards the end. After a bit of ephemera we’ll have an ITV Schools block. The Geordie Racer saga continues, then we have our core programmes. Louis returns in When Louis Met Paul and Debbie, then an ITN news report from ’92. We finish off the evening with an episode of A Touch of Frost, followed by a World in Action investigating the Birmingham Six miscarriage of justice.
