Switchin’ Kitten (1961)

After a gap of four years following the closure of MGM’s animation department, the first of a series of 13 new shorts emerged overseen by Gene Deitch and a team of Czechoslovakian animators that had little familiarity with American cartoons. Although the series would stumble into something resembling conventional T&J material, the first produced, “Switchin’ Kitten”, is a uniquely bizarre clash of sensibilities. With it’s weird setting, jerky off-model animation and heavily reverbed sound effects it feels “off” in an interesting way.
