Feature Presentation

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

In what has to stand as one of the most harrowing stories ever put to film, Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream is a tale of four interlinked characters, all of whom are addicted to drugs. The film chronicles their self-inflicted downfall, via a spellbinding vision of direction and editing.

“Here’s the interesting thing about ‘Requiem for a Dream’: it’s not depressing, like people wrongly claim that it is. It’s utterly triumphant. Why is that? Well, people incorrectly identify the protagonist of the movie. It’s not any of the human characters. It’s actually addiction. So since the “hero” of the story is addiction and by the end of the movie every character is completely overtaken by their particular addiction, it’s actually a very happy movie. Whenever I tell people this, they say that I don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘protagonist’, but they are stupid people, too dumb to appreciate my genius insight into the film and the intent of filmmakers.” ~ Percival Lebb (Rock, Shock & Drop magazine)
