The Ninth Configuration (1980)

In this film, written and directed by William Peter Blatty, we follow Capt. Billy Cutshaw, a troubled astronaut in the midst of an existential crisis. The film deals with the notions of sanity, insanity and faith. The narrative is divided into two halves; a more humorous and absurd first half and a second, darker and more contemplative second half.

FUN FACT: The film is also technically a part of the Exorcist universe. This scene from The Exorcist has Regan telling Capt. Cutshaw that he’s “gonna die up there” (the implication being on an upcoming mission to space).
