FEATURE PRESENTATION

The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)

John Boorman (Deliverance) directs this much maligned sequel to William Friedkin’s seminal horror classic. A decade after the events of the first film, Regan MacNeil remembers nothing of her ordeal at the talons of Pazuzu, Demon King of the Winds. However, cutting edge advancements in medical pseudo-science (read: utter guff) may unlock her memories and the darkness dwelling within. Co-starring Richard Burton, James Earl Jones and a swarm of flying locusts.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID…

“’Exorcist II’ is arguably the most outrageously misunderstood film of all time, as much as ‘The Exorcist’ is arguably the most outrageously overrated film of all time. Whereas the first film traded in shock, terror and spinning heads spewing vomit in order to placate the drooling masses, the sequel forgoes such base nonsense, in favour of a spiritual journey into matters of faith and inner healing.”

“Whilst it’s true that during my initial viewing of ‘Exorcist II’; I was bored and confused out of my mind, along with the rest of the audience, by the time the end credits came up onscreen and I saw the name John Boorman appear, I stopped booing and knew that I had been preemptively and hastily judgemental. For you see, John Boorman is a master of his craft, whether he be directing ‘Deliverance’, ‘Hope and Glory’ or indeed this film. One does not question the intent of a great artist. One simply admires and adorns them and their transcendent works. If Mr. Boorman tells me that James Earl Jones wearing a locust headed hat, whilst spitting plums from his mouth and screaming like a lion is of deep thematic substance, then it is not my, nor anybody else’s place to question him.”

“The unwashed, ignorant masses can keep their cheap thrills. ‘Exorcist II’ is a masterpiece destined to be admired by only the most intellectual and well educated of audiences and critics alike. Sadly, it speaks volumes about how base and simple most people are that I remain the sole admirer of this film, out of every person who I have ever met. I stand alone, as the person with the most refined taste. I stand alone as the eye which surveys great art. They call me The Heretic (citation needed – Ed).”
