Feature Presentation

The Truman Show (1998)

This film by Peter Weir explores the strange and disturbing nature of reality television and people’s obsession with TV reality stars. The narrative follows Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey); a man who is the star of the biggest and most popular reality show of all time. The twist to this tale is that Truman has no idea that he is even a part of a reality TV show. However, following a series of strange occurrences within the stage town which he was born and raised, Truman begins to question what is real and what is fabricated.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID…

“The Truman Show is arguably the greatest waste of acting talent which has ever been. Director Peter Weir cast Jim Carrey in the lead role but inexplicably chose to direct him NOT to utilise his rubber features to gurn at every available opportunity and act the fool in general. That’s like casting Bozo the Clown as an accountant. Type casting gets a bad name but it’s just common sense really; people like to see the actors they’ve seen before doing the thing which they like seeing them do. It’s why this film is a pretentious bore and why Batman Forever is a hoot and a half. Think on, Hollywood.” ~ Percival Lebb (Rock, Shock & Drop magazine)
