Sheepy’s Show #21 – Mon 2022/09/19

BANK HOLIDAY SPECIAL – EARLY START!

12:45 – Sheepy’s opening music.

12:49The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle (1980)a mockumentary film directed by Julien Temple and produced by Don Boyd and Jeremy Thomas. It tells a stylised fictional account of the formation, rise and subsequent break-up of the Sex Pistols, from the point of view of their then-manager Malcolm McLaren. In the film, McLaren claims to have created the band (in truth, they were already formed, and Jones and Cook asked him to be their manager), and manipulated them to the top of the music business, using them as puppets to both further his own agenda (in his own words: “Cash from chaos”), and to claim the financial rewards from the various record labels the band were signed to during their brief existence – EMI, A&M, Virgin, and Warner Bros. Records. Singer and frontman Johnny Rotten refused to have anything to do with the film, stating that it was “a pile of rubbish” and “Malcolm’s vision of what he believed – not true in any form”.

14:30Rammstein – Live Aus Berlin (1999)a recording of a concert by the German band Rammstein, performed in August 1998 and released a year later, featuring material from their first two albums: Herzeleid and Sehnsucht. This extract from Wikipedia may give a flavour of what to expect: “The performance of ‘Bück dich’ (‘Bend down’, ‘Bend over’) is controversial. The mimed portrayal of anal sex using a water-squirting dildo led to the video being given an 18 certificate in Europe. The first DVD release of the concert does not include the performance, although it is included on the VHS and CD releases and the 2020 reissue of the DVD.” This broadcast is sourced from the original DVD, however some kind soul uploaded the missing track to YouTube, so I’ve, er, reinserted it into the right place in the concert. Here is the track listing, in the unlikely event that anyone wants to look up translations of the lyrics:

“Spiel mit mir” (“Play with Me”) 6:20
“Herzeleid” (“Heartbreak”) 3:58
“Bestrafe mich” (“Punish Me”) 3:51
“Weißes Fleisch” (“White Flesh”) 4:34
“Sehnsucht” (“Longing”) 4:25
“Asche zu Asche” (“Ashes to Ashes”)” 3:26
“Wilder Wein” (“Wild Wine”) 5:58
“Klavier” (“Piano”) 4:49
“Heirate mich” (“Marry Me”) 7:48
“Du riechst so gut” (“You Smell So Good”) 5:24
“Du hast” (“You Have”) 4:34
“Bück dich” (“Bend Over”) 5:48
“Engel” (“Angel”)” 6:33
“Rammstein” 5:43
“Tier” (“Animal”) 3:42
“Laichzeit” (“Spawning Time”) 5:15
“Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?” (“Do You Want to See the Bed in Flames?”) 6:23
“Seemann” (“Seaman”) 8:26

16:07Rammstein – Strippeda hidden extra on the DVD: the music video for their 1998 cover of the 1986 Depeche Mode tune.

16:11Jubilee (1978)is a 1978 film directed by Derek Jarman. It stars Jenny Runacre, Ian Charleson and a host of punk rockers. The title refers to the Silver Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 1977. Numerous punk icons appear in the film including Adam Ant, Toyah, Jordan (a Malcolm McLaren protégé), Nell Campbell, Linda Spurrier, Hermine Demoriane and Jayne County. It features performances by Jayne County and Adam and the Ants. There are also cameo appearances by the Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The film was scored by Brian Eno. Plotwise, Queen Elizabeth I is transported forward in time to the film’s present day by the occultist John Dee, who commands the spirit guide Ariel (a character from William Shakespeare’s The Tempest) to bring them there. Elizabeth arrives in the shattered Britain of the 1970s and moves through the social and physical decay of the city, observing the sporadic activities of a group of aimless nihilists. Jubilee is now considered a cult classic.
