Uppingham Alsatian Dogs (1953): I met Ted Tune (the trainer of these dogs) in his later years. My Dad’s first job was carpenters apprentice to him, and they stayed in touch. An interesting man is an understatement – he built his own coffin, and kept it in his conservatory, or shed… can’t remember now. I’m not sure if he got to use it in though. Came to a sad end some years back, but left an impressive legacy on the town. The final stage if this was concluded just this month with the purchase of some properties to be set aside as (actual) affordable housing to local young couples. Oh yes, he was also a sharp shooter… I saw the newspaper clippings.
