16:00 – Walt disney – Tricks Of Our Trade (1957)

On this 1957 episode of the anthology series, Walt dwells on how animators study real life to create their illustrations. Examples are given from Fantasia on following a live ballerina to draw the animals’ movements in Dance of the Hours, and copying actual bubbles to produce the boiling lava in The Rite of Spring. The groundbreaking multiplane camera is shown off, demonstrating how it is used to mimic real landscapes, since plain animated backgrounds seem to be too plain and create a false effect.

The story of songwriter Howard Ashman who penned the lyrics for Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast before he died of AIDS at the height of the AIDS crisis in 1991.

19:40 – The Sweatbox (2002)

The Sweatbox is a 2002 American documentary film directed by Trudie Styler designed to show behind-the-scenes footage of Kingdom of the Sun (the original version of The Emperor’s New Groove). It illustrated the slow and painful transformation from Kingdom of the Sun to The Emperor’s New Groove, including director Roger Allers, musician Sting, artists and voice cast being dismayed by the new direction. The film’s major theme is creative-executive conflicts.

21:15 – The Kingdom Of Dreams And Madness (2013)

Follows the routines of those employed at Studio Ghibli, including filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki as they work to release two films simultaneously, The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
