The Throwback returns after a long hiatus – our theme year is 1988. We kick off at 4pm with a full startup and Ceefax segment followed by a complete edition of Daytime Live. We continue with our usual programmes, Home and Away, The Bill (Watch out for JuMoo’s Lucy Benjamin) and Eastenders. This week’s Play For Today, the Mike Leigh drama Home Sweet Home, features Eric Richard (familiar to regular Throwback viewers as veteran desk jockey Bob Cryer from The Bill). Crimewatch and some news follows, then we then kick on to our depressing documentary segment: a hard-hitting look at the dangers of rave culture in World in Action, and pharmaceutical shithousery as The Cook Report investigates one woman’s addiction to prescription drugs. We wrap up as usual with Electric Avenue, some Open University programming and a closedown.

It was dramatised from the book of the same name by Aylmer Hall, adapted for television by Trevor “Ace of Wands” Preston, and produced and directed by Mike “Get Carter” Hodges. It was notable for its use of a progressive music soundtrack, including music from The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Cream, and in particular, The Nice (whose song “The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack”, from the album of the same name, was the title track), and Pink Floyd (whose song “Saucerful of Secrets”, also from the album of the same name :-), was plundered extensively, including for the end credits).

A strange phone call and a wallet found in an old dark house lead three teenagers and their dog to follow a mysterious character across London. First broadcast on Thu 3rd Oct 1968 by ITV.
