In light of the news of Cal Wilson’s passing, today i’ve replaced the “Musikbrake” segments with stand up clips of her from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and a couple of her sketches from the Australian varient of “Thank God You’re Here” – an improv show where the performer is put into a costume then thrust into a scene where they’re the only one without a script.

When i first started exploring Australian and New Zealand TV, she was a mainstay on a lot of the stand up/improv shows I enjoyed. Any of you who were around for the “Slide Show” showings a few months back might remember her from that.

It stars Christopher Strauli as Norman, a rather naive middle-class man who is admitted to a hospital ward and finds that he is sharing it with a working-class layabout called Figgis (James Bolam) and an upper-class hypochondriac called Archie (Peter Bowles). All three of them cause headaches for the hospital staff, led by Richard Wilson with Derrick Branche. This week, when Figgis becomes obsessed with horoscopes in magazines and believes their predictions the others are sceptical – until Norman continually beats Glover at cards. However, Figgis becomes so preoccupied with astrological predictions he is convinced he is going to die – forcing Dr Thorpe to beat him at his own game to cure him of his obsession. This week’s film will be the martial arts cyberpunk odyssey Cyborg (1989), starring Jean-Claude van Damme as the badass mercenary Gibson Rickenbacker. Civilisation has been ravaged by a plague called ‘the living death’ – a group of eggheads on the east coast of America battle to save what is left of humanity. A band of scum-sucking bottom feeders led by the vicious Fender Tremolo (I’m not making this shit up I swear) threaten to snuff out humanity’s last hope. Can our hero stop them?

I have a nagging feeling that I’ve been showing too many good films recently, so this week we’re ploughing right into some good old-fashioned straight to video bullshit with Out for a Kill (2003). Starring Steven “Generous” Seagal as professor Robert Burns, a man who gets caught up in a Chinese underworld drug deal and is framed for a crime he did not commit. He escapes prison to prove his innocence and kick the sorry asses of the lowlife puke-stains who fitted him up.
