Children of the Stoned more like

Aww there was this father at the bar ordering food and drink for his family. He got a Fruit Shoot for his daughter Kevin.

Unfortunately the bar were out of straws!!

“Not to worry,” I say, pulling a straw out of my waistband. “I’ve got this covered.”

But the weirdo kicks off at his savour? Last Xmas meal I ever have out.

Ach, yer bugger, I was going to do Escape Into Night if I ever started streaming. Which isn’t certain, so fair play, I guess.

A warning though: although very atmospheric, it’s also glacially slow. Still, it’s only six parts and shares the honour with Quatermass and the Pit as the only thing on TV to give me nightmares as a child.

Amused to see it back-to-back with Children of the Stones though… before the internet, whenever anybody mentioned this show but couldn’t remember the name of it, people would always say “Oh you mean Children of the Stones” — no we bloody didn’t! For me it wasn’t solved until an issue of SFX or Dreamwatch some time in the late 90s where someone wrote in saying “…but not Children of the Stones” and they came up with the right answer, linking it to the film Paperhouse as well as the original book, Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr.

Any particular reason you’re showing the newer glitzier production first each Sunday? πŸ™‚

Finally, look out for something amusing: Marianne’s bedroom in Escape Into Night is very clearly Beth from Timeslip’s bedroom, redressed slightly; same production team, with the marvellous Ruth Boswell.

Just thought I’d keep the colour/black & white arrangement the same as before, felt appropriate. EIN was originally filmed in colour of course and had the masters junked, just like Timeslip.

I can’t imagine EIN in colour… it almost seems made for monochrome.

Even though I only watched Timeslip in b/w at the time, we knew how it was supposed to look due to the copious colour photos in TV Times and Look-In.

With EIN I don’t have that at all.
