Feature Presentation

Return to Oz (1985)

In this unofficial sequel to the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz (itself based based upon the fantasy works of novelist L. Frank Baum), we follow Dorothy, as she returns to the Land of Oz, only to discover that it has been overthrown by the tyrannical Nome King. Joining together with a band of misfit friends, Dorothy must face her greatest fears in order to try and restore life to the land and people of Oz.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID…

There was a simple charm to 1939’s ‘The Wizard of Oz’; a film of song and dance and happy little munchkins. Oh certainly, there was an evil witch and her army of malicious flying monkeys but that was merely in order to give the film a token antagonist in order to keep the plot moving along. Ultimately, it was an exuberant film which could be enjoyed by children of all ages. Sadly with this new followup production, ‘Return to Oz’, we find that the once joyful land of Oz has been soured by the pessimistic dark fantasies of 80’s Hollywood executives. Toto, were not in Kansas anymore, indeed!”

“If ever there was a film which may scar the young fragile and fertile minds of babes, then this is it. Innocence and purity are apparently dying arts within the medium of children’s entertainment and this film critic weeps for their absence in modern filmmaking. One should only take their children to watch this film if they desire to raise them to wet the bed and become the next Jeffery Dahmer. Bring back the innocence, I say. Children’s entertainment peaked with ‘The Waltons’.”

“If we want to prepare our youth for the world which awaits them, then it is imperative that they be protected from anything which may frighten them. Children should go into the adult world full of carefree joy, not living in fear of squeaky creeps in dark alleyways and sociopaths in positions of power with the ill intent to control those less fortune and vulnerable than themselves (such are the sights which this grizzly and dour film has to offer). At the very least, I certainly can’t recall there being a scene where John-Boy runs away from a headless witch and ‘The Waltons’ was all the better for it!”

“If you’re an irresponsible enough parent to take your child to watch this terrifying film, then you may as well go the whole hog and make it a double bill with ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and that’s not even hyperbole. You people make me sick!” ~ Percival Lebb (Rock, Shock & Drop magazine)
