the Show #24 – Montag ist Funtag!

Big films! • Music! • Quizzes! • Comedy! • Intrigue!
Let’s get the week off to a flying start with some kick-ass entertainment:

16:00 – The Prodigy – Breezeblock Mix (1998)
\ We kick off with a sterling cut-up mix made by Liam Howlett of The Prodigy for Radio 1. This mix later found a commercial release as The Dirtchamber Sessions but with various edits and changes to the tracklist. Accompanied by gorgeous aerial views of Chicago.

17:05 – Second Guess
\ My deep dive into quizshows past turns up this Andrew O’Connor vehicle which is actually a decent format. Teams of two answer questions – the twist being that it’s the person who buzzed-in’s partner who needs to answer the question correctly, aaaaaah.

17:35 – Funny Business
\ Late night comedy round-up show from 1996, featuring interviews with a just-breaking-out Harry Hill and John Shuttleworth, plus a look at forthcoming TV comedy attractions.

18:00 – I Love 1991
\ The BBC’s postmillenial nostalgia-poke continues with a prance through the trends and culture of 1991, amusingly linked by Sergeant Vic Reeves and Corporal Bob Mortimer from their military garden.

19:05 – FILM: Anchorman – The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
\ Madcap yet lovingly-made ensemble comedy about the news staff of local TV station KVWN in the early 1970s. Buffoonish anchorman Ron Burgundy is threatened by the arrival of attractive reporter Veronica Corningstone.

20:45 – It’ll Be Alright On The Night 5 (1987)
\ A hot slab of classic TV outtakes from around the world, in this fine example of IBAOTN at its mid-80s pinnacle. Hosted of course by joke-scribbling clipboard-botherer Denis Norden.

21:35 – FILM: My Old School (2022)
\ Marvellous documentary probing the mid-90s case of a GCSE student at a Glasgow high school who was bizarrely revealed to be a 30 year old impostor. Bolstered by some nice Daria-style animation, it guest stars Alan Cumming. An ever-untangling story of almost-unbelievable intrigue.

23:20 – Night mix
\ We round things off with a frankly stunning genre-bending mix from DJ Food and DK – Now Listen Again, their 2007 follow-up to 2001’s Now Listen (played on a previous the Show).

00:25 – Closedown

Bonus choons and daftness throughout
