17:45 – Only When I Laugh – S01E02 – Operation Norman – A sitcom made by Yorkshire Television for ITV, written by Eric Chappell (Rising Damp, Home to Roost). It stars Christopher Strauli as Norman, a rather naive middle-class man who is admitted to a hospital ward and finds that he is sharing it with a working-class layabout called Figgis (James Bolam) and an upper-class hypochondriac called Archie (Peter Bowles). All three of them cause headaches for the hospital staff, led by Richard Wilson with Derrick Branche. This week, Norman has to have an operation for his appendix to be removed but Figgis’s doom-laden description of operations and Dr Thorpe’s tiredness do not give him confidence and he hides in the toilet, having to be coaxed out… First broadcast on 5th Nov 1979 by ITV. Am rerunning this for one of our now-regular viewers who missed it first time round (just catching the last 2 or 3 episodes) and would like to see it all.

Pee-wee’s Playhouse

Season 1 Episode 1, “Ice Cream Soup” (Aired September 13, 1986)
– – – – – “Sandwich ho!” – – – – –
The first episode of the show produced after the movie Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, this manic half-hour features one of Paramount’s “Color Classics”, The Fresh Vegetable Mystery, one of a series of shorts produced by Fleischer Studios for Paramount Pictures as a competitor to Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies.

With the theme by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, and sung by Cyndi Lauper (imitating Betty Boop, credited as “Ellen Shaw”), guest composers over the show’s five seasons included (deep breath) The Residents, Todd Rundgren, Danny Elfman (who provided the score for both of the Pee-wee movies), Mitchell Froom, Van Dyke Parks, George S. Clinton, Dweezil Zappa and Scott Thunes.

Guests today include Phil Hartman as Captain Carl and Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis.

OTH Weekly Zeppelin

welcome to part two of the season transition for OTHTV

The front end of the Zeppelin is where we’ll be seeing the first changes as we’ve nixed those crappy rips of byker grove. the early zone will now kick off with Chucklevision and Ship to Shore, before a music break, and two new programmes to the stream – My Parents Are Aliens, and Mysteries From Beyond The Other Dominion, which proved to be a bit of a hit on last week’s mini-drone. following this there will be another music break and then Beavis & Butthead and New Wave Theatre.

Following the Radio Break and the last of “the story of pop radio”, the SUDS (Soaps & Undefined Drama/Serial) Zone, consists of Strange Paradise and Space Island One. I’ve never seen Space Island One and hasn’t heard of it until last week. Might be good, might be shite. Timekode seemed to reckon it nicked its premise from Jupiter Moon. if they’ve got sour grapes over it, it’s gotta be worth a watch.

After another quick music break, we close out the pasteurised, sanitised and homogenised version of Holey Moley with a double bill – Next week,…
